How to Make Hash at Home from Scratch
How to make hash at home

Hash, a cannabis derivative steeped in centuries of tradition, can be easily crafted in the convenience of your own home with minimal tools, time, and expense.

How to make hash at home? After a homegrown harvest, making hash proves especially advantageous as it allows for the concentration of plentiful buds and trim. This extraction method is versatile, suitable for any season or climate, though it’s often preferred during winter when cooler temperatures and low humidity create ideal conditions. By this point, outdoor-grown cannabis should have undergone the necessary drying and curing post-autumn harvest.

Understanding Hash

So, what exactly is hash? It’s the resin extracted from cannabis plants, usually shaped into balls, bricks, logs, or patties. This resin originates from trichomes, tiny glands housing cannabinoids and terpenes, distinct from the tar residue in smoking devices.

As a cannabis concentrate, hash boasts a robust concentration of cannabinoids like THC or CBD. It offers multiple consumption methods: smoking solo, blending into a bowl, rolling into joints, dabbing, vaping, or infusing into edibles and drinks.

Adding a layer of complexity, the term “hash” can encompass all cannabis concentrates, such as shatter, wax, budder, sugar, or crumble. However, in this context, we’re specifically focusing on making hash created manually or with basic mechanical tools.

Unlike concentrates relying on solvents for extraction like BHO or shatter, hash is solventless, ensuring a pure, chemical-free end product.

Hash-Making Techniques

How to make hashish? There are several methods for extracting and compacting hash. Using diverse starting materials like buds, trim, and even stalks and stems can produce hash in a range of colors, from dark to light brown. Typically, lighter shades indicate superior refinement and quality.

Crafting Bubble Hash (Ice Water Hash)

The core concept behind bubble hash entails freezing and isolating trichomes from cannabis plant material. This process involves submerging cannabis in ice water and stirring it vigorously, known as “washing,” followed by filtering and purifying.

To start, you’ll require Bubble Bags, a set of 4-8 bags with mesh screens of various sizes, from coarse to fine. After freezing the cannabis material in ice water, it is poured into these bags with progressively finer meshes to strain out plant debris. The higher the refinement, the better the quality, and the lighter the color of the resulting hash.

How to make hash weed? Exercise caution with stalks, branches, and stems, as they may contain minimal amounts of trichomes and can puncture the bags. Attempting to extract these trichomes from such parts may not be worthwhile due to the risk of damaging the bags.

The key rule to remember is:

  1. Top-notch hash requires top-notch flower.
  2. Don’t anticipate exceptional hash from mediocre flower or trim.

Needed Equipment:

  • Bubble bags (4-8 bags, ranging from 75-250 microns)
  • Two 5-gallon buckets
  • Long stirring stick
  • Bag of ice

Steps:

  • Preparation: Place buds, trim, and other cannabis plant material in a zip lock bag and freeze overnight to aid in trichome breakage.
  • On the following day, prepare the ice-water mixture by layering ice in one 5-gallon bucket, adding frozen weed on top, then more ice.
  • Fill the bucket with enough water to cover the weed and ice.
  • Let it sit for at least 20 minutes to facilitate trichome breakage.
  • In the second bucket, layer the bubble bags from finest mesh at the bottom to coarsest mesh at the top.
  • Agitate the weed and ice mixture in the first bucket continuously for 20 minutes to shake loose trichomes.
  • Pour the mixture into the topmost bubble bag in the second bucket.
  • Remove each bag, allowing the mixture to flow into the next bag through the mesh, starting from the coarsest to the finest mesh.
  • Spoon the wet hash onto a drying sheet when you reach the bag with the finest mesh.
  • Let it dry for 2-3 hours, then shape it into patties or balls and dry for 1-2 days before consuming.
  • Some hash makers also collect product from coarser bags and make hash patties from those. For instance, from the sixth and seventh bags out of eight.
  • Bubble hash is graded on a star system, with six-star hash being the most refined and one star being the least refined.
  • High-grade ice water hash may also be referred to as “full melt” or “ice wax.”
  • Optionally, you can use specially designed washing machines for stirring bubble hash, but avoid using your clothes washing machine.

Crafting Dry Sift Hash (Brick Hash)

How to make weed hash? You can create dry sift hash, previously called brick hash, at home by employing screens to extract the trichomes from cannabis plants. This method harkens back to the iconic scenes of ’60s and ’70s cannabis culture.

Materials Required:

  • Hash screens (3-4 screens, with sizes ranging from 75-250 microns)
  • Credit card or equivalent tool for gathering hash
  • (Optional) Hash press

Instructions:

  • (Optional) It’s recommended to freeze your cannabis plant material overnight to enhance trichome extraction.
  • Arrange the screens in a stack, placing the finest screen at the bottom and the coarsest on top, on a clean, dry surface.
  • Rub the cannabis material over the top screen, allowing trichomes to fall through to the next screen.
  • Continue rubbing until no more trichomes are being extracted.
  • Use a credit card or similar tool to scrape trichomes from each screen and transfer them to the next screen for further refinement.
  • Repeat this process with each subsequent screen to refine the hash more thoroughly.
  • (Optional) Collect the final hash and utilize a hash press to shape it into a brick. Typically, hash presses involve two plates that compress the hash into a brick shape.
  • The hash can be kept in powder form or pressed into bricks. Pressed hash can be sprinkled on bowls or incorporated into joints.

Similar to bubble hash, hash can be collected and pressed at each screen level, with hash from coarser screens having a darker and harsher flavor profile.

How to Gather Finger Hash (Charas)

One of the oldest and simplest methods of producing hash involves collecting finger hash, traditionally known as charas, from the hands and fingertips of those involved in trimming and handling marijuana plants.

After spending hours trimming or handling cannabis, a thin layer of resin accumulates on the skin, which can then be scraped off, shaped into a ball, and smoked.

It’s important to note that finger hash can be harsh due to its unrefined nature and the presence of plant material. While some trimmers enjoy smoking it, many people prefer more processed forms of hash.

In commercial cultivation settings, trimmers often wear gloves for hygiene reasons, as consumers prefer clean hands touching their cannabis buds. Therefore, finger hash is typically only collected by individuals trimming marijuana at home or for friends.

Creating hash is a longstanding tradition. Enjoy experimenting with making your own hash at home!
